Sr. Julaine Middendorf

Sister Mary Julaine (Mary Jalaine) Middendorf was born in Covington, Kentucky, on December 26, 1940, to William and Emma Middendorf. She was the seventh arrival of 10 children. Her parents’ nurturing and strong faith created a very loving environment for her family.As a child, Julaine heard God’s call to religious life when she was in the second grade and continued to grow in that desire through high school. After graduating Notre Dame Academy in 1958 Julaine entered the Sisters of Notre Dame. Sister professed her first vows on August 15, 1961.Sister Julaine received her BA in Education from Villa Madonna College (Thomas More University) in 1965. She started her ministry teaching the primary grades in the Diocese of Covington and Cincinnati. In 1971, she received her MA in Religious Education at the Jesuit University in Detroit, Michigan. Sister Julaine served as Director of Religious Education for 29 years at several parishes and at the Covington Diocesan Religious Education Office. Sister also started the Pastoral Ministry Department at St. Claire HealthCare in Morehead, Kentucky, where she worked for 3 years. After fifty years in ministry, sister retired but continued her community service to the Sisters of Notre Dame. She enjoyed teaching and considered it a privilege to bring children and adults to a closer relationship with Jesus.On January 19, 2019 Sister Mary Julaine went home to God very peacefully surrounded by her loving, sisters and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Ralph, Father Cyril, SM, and Robert Middendorf and her sisters, Dorothy Byrne, and Jean Doellman, She leaves behind her brother Jerry Middendorf, and her sisters, Donna McMurrer, and Paula Wood. Sister also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, at the Provincial Center, followed by the Wake Service at 5:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 7:00 p.m. in the convent chapel.
