Alan Russell Shuman, age 92, of Florence, Ky., passed away peacefully on Monday, March 6, 2017 at Villa Springs in Erlanger, Ky., his home for the past year. Alan, a WW II veteran, was a native of Jacksonville, Florida, and attended the University of Florida in 1942. In April 1943, he was called into the Armed Forces, and served in the Field Artillery of the U.S. Army. He was sent to the Pacific Theater in February 1944, and remained there until December 1945, when he was honorably discharged. Alan then continued his education at the University of Georgia, where he graduated in 1948. In the top 10 percent of his class of Business Administration, he was elected to the honorary Beta Gamma Sigma Society. Alan was employed by the Bell South Telephone Company while still in college, and worked there from September 1948 until June 1985, in Florida and Kentucky. He was a district accounting manager with Bell South and retired in 1985. The two most important things in life to Alan were his family and his country. He provided love and support to his entire extended family, and will be remembered and missed by all those who had the honor of knowing him. Alan was preceded in death by his beloved wife Elizabeth Shuman (Vincent) and his loving daughter, Vickie Lair. Survivors include his daughter Patti (Tim) Lally, and his grandchildren Steve Lair (29), Kelly Lair (26), Christopher Lally (25), and Brian Lally (17). Visitation will be Thursday, March 9th, at Middendorf Funeral Home, 3312 Madison Pike, Ft. Wright, Ky., from 10:00 - 12:00, with service at 12:00 noon. A full military with honors burial and gravesite service will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 3227 Dixie Hwy, Erlanger, Ky. Lunch reception at Walt's Hitching Post immediately following the funeral service.
