Kenneth "Mick" Anthony Halloran

July 26, 1929 — June 16, 2015

Born on the cusp of the Great Depression in Lockland, Ohio, he was the youngest of The Five Fine Boys of Gertrude Halloran (nee: Dollman) and Daniel Paul Halloran. He was affectionately known to all as "Mick" Halloran, most thought because of his long Irish lineage. Only his loving brothers and he knew it was due to his enormous ears that resembled those of "Mickey Mouse" hence "Mick". Growing up, he caddied at several local golf courses and developed a deep love of and respect for the game of golf. He was a scratch handicap in his teens (ultimately winning the 1957 Manila Polo Club Championship, the Philippine equivalent of the US Open at the time). He watched his brothers (Ralph Halloran, Raymond Halloran, Jerry Halloran and Don Halloran) serve our country in World War II and when he graduated from Roger Bacon High School in Cincinnati, he joined the Navy Reserves, serving 9 honorable years. Stints in Cuba, South America, Hawaii, among others with the Navy fed his travel bug. He saw the world and photographed much of it - he was never without his camera. He and his brother Jerry would fly around the country in Jerry's single engine plane exploring our great country. When he and Jerry were but 14 and 10, they would jump a train in Cincinnati and go to Cleveland to see their cousin play for the Indians. No adults, just two kids on a train, getting a hotel and exploring the city by themselves. There was no fear in Mick Halloran. Despite his deep and abiding love of travel and adventure, Mick always found his way home. He graduated from UC College of Engineering first in his class, joined Proctor and Gamble and continued his travel, only this time with his own army. He married Ann Carole Rymarquis of Ft. Mitchell, KY in 1956 and they immediately shipped off to Manila, Philippines with P&G, Mick as Director of Research. They spent 8 glorious years in Manila where 3 of their 6 children were born - Michele Halloran, Colleen Zirkelbach (nee: Halloran) and Sean Halloran(deceased). A fourth bundle of joy, Kathleen Halloran, was born in Mexico City, Mexico where Mick was stationed next with the company. Finally in 1968, Mick and Carole returned to Northern Kentucky where their remaining two children (affectionately known to their siblings as "the American ones") were born - Brian Halloran and Molly Halloran. There they stayed until Mick retired from P&G in 1990, living in Northern Kentucky surrounded by Carole's huge extended family who Mick loved dearly. While four of the Fine Boys of Gert and Paul scattered to the corners of our country, Mick loved Cincinnati and everything about it, and that is why he always found his way back. An avid Reds and Bengals season ticket holder, he imparted a love of Cincinnati and it's sports teams, and a sense of "home", in all of his children. He also imparted a love of golf in his children, saying "It builds character". He said you could always tell the character of a man by the number of strokes they "told" you they had on a hole. Don't worry, Mick was keeping track. He was a man of immense principle and great character. A devout Catholic, he was a man of deep faith in God and what was right and wrong. Anyone who met Mick could tell this immediately. He spoke few words that had no meaning or purpose, and he had no time for dillydallying. These traits he gave to his children, who are all completely distraught at the loss of their great friend, mentor and the greatest father ever. He buried the love of his life in 1996 and tragically his son Sean in 1997. He bore those losses stoically and deeply, but you would catch him crying at times over both losses. He buried 3 of his brothers, the last remaining of The Five Fine Boys now being Don. But in Mick's inimitable fashion, he doesn't want you to mourn his loss. "Just cremate me and toss me in a hole - no dilly dallying." Instead, celebrate Mick's life. It was amazing. He loved life and all it had to offer, and was no stranger to an emergency 18, a glass of Makers Mark, one of his awful Dutch Master cigars and going to some new destination if only because he'd never been. And he loved his his wife, children, his 5 grandchildren (Megan, Ethan, Caitlin and Liam Zirkelbach and Jaclyn Halloran), 1 great grandchild (Ian Hebert) (and his grand dogs Gracie, Parker, Seamus and Finnegan), his family and his friends with equal measure. If you had the chance to know him, you couldn't help but be enriched immeasurably by the experience. Mick left this planet in peace on June 16, 2015. It was a Tuesday morning at 7:45 a.m., and his daughter Michele held his hand as he took his last breath. He was at home, in his favorite chair, right where he wanted to be all along. Visitation will be held Friday, June 19, 2015 from 4 to 8 pm at MIDDENDORF FUNERAL HOME, 3312 MADISON PIKE, FORT WRIGHT, KY 41017.
