Sister Mary Evangelita was born on February 27, 1917, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her parents, George and Otillia Stenger Spechthold, raised six children, 4 boys and 2 girls; Dorothy was the second youngest. She attended St. George Elementary School and St. Agnes School, Bond Hill. Here she became acquainted with the Sisters of Notre Dame. After graduating from Regina High School, she joined the Notre Dame Sisters and made her profession of vows on August 17, 1940. Sister Mary Evangelita was a teacher and was principal in several elementary schools in Ohio and Kentucky. Her longest place of ministry was at St. Martin School, Cheviot, OH for fifteen years. She also carried out the roles of high school guidance councilor, as well as retirement coordinator, and provincial assistant for the Sisters of Notre Dame. Sister is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers: George, Emmet, James, and Clarence, and her sister, Marie Boyce. Sister leaves behind a nephew and several nieces, along with great nieces and great nephews. Visitation begins at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at the Provincial House, St. Joseph Heights, followed by a Wake Service at 10:00 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in the convent chapel. Interment will follow the Mass on Thursday morning, July 3, in the convent cemetery.
