Joseph George "Whitey" passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2013, at the age of 90. He was born on May 21, 1923, to Joseph George, Sr. and Clara Momper Volpenhein in Covington, KY. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and upon returning from the war, met and married the love of his life, Esther Berling, sharing 52 years of marriage before she passed away in 2003. Whitey worked for the C&O Railroad before joining Dixie Wholesale Grocery. After retirement from Dixie, he worked as a security guard at Turfway Race Track. He was a member of St. Agnes Church, the Knights of Columbus - Kehoe Council, and the Ft. Wright Hilltoppers. Whitey loved his family, friends, the Cincinnati Reds, horse races, Pinochle, growing tomatoes, and making people laugh. Preceded in death by his parents Joe and Clara, his wife Esther, his brother Ed Volpenhein, and sisters Catherine Robke and Mary Fritz, he is survived by four children Mary Jo (Chuck) McFadden, Kathy (Frank) Wilfong, Dan Volpenhein, and Gary Volpenhein, four grandchildren Brian, Keith, and Eric Wilfong and Monica McFadden, and one great grandchild Sophia Wilfong. He also leaves two brothers Charles Volpenhein of Covington, KY, and Frank Volpenhein of Ft. Mitchell, KY, and a sister Clara Betty McMannon of Idaho Falls, ID, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 2, at St. Agnes Church from 9:30-11:30 A.M. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 A.M. Memorials are suggested to the Knights of Columbus - Kehoe Council, 828 Elm Street, Ludlow, KY 41016, or the St. Agnes Church Christian Service Fund, 1680 Dixie Highway, Park Hills, KY, or the charity of your choice.
