Thomas F. McCay

August 26, 1918 — November 25, 2013

Dr. Thomas Frederick McCay departed this life on November 25, 2013. Known as "Tom" or "Doc" to those who knew and loved him, he was 95 years young and touched the lives of countless people from his 43 year podiatry practice and "second career" as a part-time employee of McDonald's for 16 years. From a generation who knew the meaning of hard work, love of country, devotion to family, commitment, sacrifice, and the power of education, he passed these values to his six children who not only loved him dearly, but respected him as a man of substance in a world sorely in need of substance. Doc truly earned his place as a member of Tom Brokaw's "greatest generation." He routinely placed others before himself, treating patients in nursing homes on his "day off" and making house calls to shut-ins often at no cost. His word was his bond and a handshake was all that was needed to seal the deal. Tom was a member of St. Agnes Catholic church for over 50 years, many spent in service to his faith, as an usher. He is surely on the "bullet train" to heaven to meet his Savior. By his actions, we learned the true definition of "hero." Tom was born in Covington, Kentucky on August 26, 1918, and was a life-long resident of Northern Kentucky. He graduated from Holy Cross High School, after which he honorably served for 4 1/2 years in the Army Air Corps in WWII with assignments in the U.S. and Europe. We owe him, and all veterans like him, a debt of gratitude for their sacrifice and service. He was swept off his feet by the love of his life, Ruth Doty McCay, to whom he was happily married for 70 years. Their commitment to each other and the enduring power of love produced six children, 15 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. They taught us all that true happiness comes not from material things, but strong family bonds. Left to cherish his memory and carry his torch are his devoted wife, Ruth McCay, his six children, Sharon Bargo, Bridget McCay, Amy Webster, Terry McCay, Tim McCay, and Jennifer Helson, special nephew Mark McCay and niece Susanne Martinez, their spouses, life partners, grandchildren, and great-children. Tom's family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association in his honor. Visitation Wednesday from 9:30 to 11:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 am at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Ft. Wright, Kentucky. Followed by a graveside service at St. Mary's Cemetery in Ft. Mitchell, KY.
