Sister Mary Carmella was born on June 10, 1925 in Covington, Kentucky. She attended St. Aloysius School until grade six. Then in the seventh and eighth grades she attended St. Agnes School, Park Hills where she became acquainted with the Sisters of Notre Dame. After graduating from Notre Dame Academy, she worked for two years as a stenographer and then entered the Sisters of Notre Dame professing her vows on August 11, 1948. Sister Carmella taught in elementary schools in Kentucky, Ohio, and Alabama for 50 years. She was also trained as a librarian. After retiring from classroom teaching, Sister became a part-time tutor and taught Spanish in extra-curricular programs. Her longest assignment was at St. Mary School, Alexandria where she ministered for 23 years. Sister Carmella had many interests. In addition to teaching she had a love of writing poetry. Sister Mary Carmella was preceded in death by her brother John and her sister LaVerne Ober. She is survived by her sister Marian Hoffman and several nieces and nephews. Visitation begins at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19, at the Provincial House, St. Joseph Heights, followed by a Wake Service at 5:00 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 p.m. in the convent chapel. Interment will be Thursday morning in the convent cemetery at 9:30 a.m. Memorials are requested to the Sisters of Notre Dame, Covington, KY.
