She is a Veteran of World War II where she served in the Pacific as an Army Flight Registered Nurse. There she met her husband of 52 years, John Jay O'Hara who preceded her in death. A talented homemaker and devoted mother to seven children, Dorothy had a passion for a variety of causes especially those that addressed the needs of those born with mental and physical disabilities. Upon receiving the 1976 Enquirer Woman of the Year Award she was quoted, "I guess there isn't any one hobby that interests me to the point of giving up the others, my family is my main interest".
