Virginia Mary Schlief Hassert, born February 19, 1917, in Chattanooga, Tenn., died July 1, 2012, in Covington, at the age of 95. Loving wife of the late Edward J. Hassert.Loving mother of Ronald (Brigitte) Hassert of Slidell, La.; the late Virginia Lee (Jim) Gillespie of Villa Hills, the late Barbara Ann (Marvin) Knobloch of Villa Hills, and the late Walter (Martha) Hassert of Covington. Her memory and kindness will always be cherished by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Grandmother of Bradley (Danell) Hassert of Slidell, La., Sonja Ayers (Michael) Farrar of Baton Rouge, La.; David (Nan) Granneman of Philadelphia, Pa.; Danny Gillespie of Taylor Mill, Holly Gillespie of Newport; the late Michael Knobloch, Linda (David) Rechtin of Villa Hills, Lisa (Gary) Kreutzer of Cincinnati, Ohio, Kristy Knobloch of Florence; Victoria (Brian) Richardson of Cincinnati, Ohio, Andrea (Jim) Gardner of Covington, Melissa (Greg) Behler of Erlanger, Daniel (Monica Dias) Hassert of Covington, Stephen (Lily) Hassert of Taylor Mill, and Alicia (John) Linstead of Erlanger. Great-grandmother of Kandice Wilkinson-Ayers, Alana Hassert; Avin, Christopher, Melissa, Heather, Sarah and Jordan Granneman; Dustin, Connor, Haley and Tanner Gillespie; Alex, Jennifer and Suzanne Rechtin; Brianna and Caitlyn Richardson, Natalie and James Gardner, Lucas and McKenzie Behler, Mary Abigail and Jacob Hassert, Xavier, Alexander, Dominic and Phillip Hassert, and Kristopher, Noah, Anne Marie and Matthew Linstead. Virginia was a longtime member of Kenton County Homemakers and an avid volunteer with the PTO at Covington Holmes High School and at St. Elizabeth Medical Centers, where she also helped to start the gift shop at the south unit.In her caring and loving ways she has donated her remains for anatomical research in the hope that with this gesture she will be able to help others in need. We would like to express our thanks and appreciation to the staff of Providence Pavilion in Covington for the care and compassion they showed our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. We also want to express our thanks to Bluegrass Hospice, even though she was not under their care very long. A memorial service will take place at a later date.
