Donald Whitaker, age 90, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2024 with his wife and daughter by his side, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, love, and craftsmanship. A devoted husband for 68 years, he was the heart of his family—a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, cherished uncle, and loyal friend.
Don proudly served his country for 20 years in both the United States Marine Corps and the Air Force. A veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and the Korean War, his military service was a testament to his commitment to his nation. After his service, he worked for Northrop for 25 years. His expertise in hydraulics and egress took him to Saudi Arabia, where he served as an instructor during the formation of the Royal Saudi Air Force. Upon returning to the United States, he contributed his skills as a hydraulic and flight control specialist on the B-2 stealth bomber.
A natural fabricator, Don had a passion for building hot rods, a hobby that brought him great joy. He loved working with his hands and took pride in his ability to craft custom cars from the ground up.
Faith was a guiding force in his life, and Don served as a Deacon and lay Pastor in the Baptist church, living out his beliefs with kindness, quiet strength, and love for others.
Don treasured time spent with family, and he was particularly close to his sister-in-law Laray Adams and his late brother-in-law, Jim Adams, who were not only his best friends but also his cherished traveling companions. Together, they raised their children and shared countless adventures, creating memories that their families will forever hold dear.
Though he traveled the world, his greatest joy was always the time spent with his loved ones. His devotion to his country, his family, and his faith was evident in every aspect of his life, and his gentle, hardworking spirit will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Arlene Whitaker, his children, Donna and John Cooper, Richard and Diane Whitaker and Jonathan and Naomi Whitaker, his grandchildren, Myanna and Matthew Webster, Nathan and Anny Whitaker, Joshua Whitaker, Justin and Kaytlynn Whitaker, Rachael Whitiker, Alison and Lloyd Gilkes and Sam Cooper, great-grandchildren, Bryant Webster, Arden Webster, Colin Webster and Silas Gilkes and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in his honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a cause he held close to his heart. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
