Frank Joseph Broering, (affectionately known as "Whitey" to his many friends), 85, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2025, following a motor vehicle accident.
Frank was a devoted husband of 61 years to Donna Matteoli Broering, who survived the accident. He was born on January 11, 1940, and raised in Covington, KY. Frank proudly served in the United States Army from 1962 to 1965. He went on to spend 25 years in operations leadership at R.L. Polk & Company and retired early in 1994 at the age of 54.
Known for his outgoing personality, Frank never met a stranger. He had a genuine interest in people and loved to hear their stories, making everyone he met feel like a lifelong friend. His kindness, compassion, and unwavering care for those around him were hallmarks of his character.
Frank had many passions, with two standing out above the rest: bridge and golf. He would eagerly ask everyone he met about their thoughts on the game, often regaling them with stories of why he believed it was the greatest sport on Earth. His tales, especially those about his own rounds on the course, were legendary—and no one was safe from hearing every detail of his golf adventures. If you wanted advice, or even if you didn’t, Frank was always happy to share his insights.
When the weather was nice and he wasn’t on the golf course, Frank could often be found tending to his yard or garden. He was particularly proud of his homegrown tomatoes and waged an ongoing battle against squirrels and deer who would try to steal the fruits of his labor. Once harvested, he would can quarts of tomato juice and relish, which he generously shared with friends and family throughout town.
In an era of constant connectivity, Frank stood apart—never owning a cellphone, as he valued his freedom. He especially loved taking his family, and particularly his grandchildren, out for breakfast, cherishing those moments together.
We are heartbroken by our loss, and Frank will be missed by so many who had the privilege of knowing him.
Frank is survived by his wife, Donna; children Stacie Schmahl Askin (Randy, deceased), Tammy (Joe) Cahill, and Mike (Jenni) Broering; his grandchildren Emily Schmahl Rolf (Matt), Matt Schmahl, Kelly Grace, Jenna Schmahl, Joseph, Patrick, Drew, Christopher, and Thomas Cahill, and Mady, Amelia, AJ, and Nola Broering; as well as three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Elaine Berberich and Jeanine Kalker, with whom he shared a close bond, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 21, from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m., followed immediately by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Pius X Church, 348 Dudley Road, Edgewood, KY. Interment will follow at Mother of God Cemetery in Latonia, KY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Zachary Ronan Hart Memorial Fund 50 E. Rivercenter Blvd, Suite 430, Covington, KY 41011, or The Point Arc 104 W. Pike Street, Covington, KY 41011.
