Mary Katherine McKenzie (nee Kabitsch), age 63, of Fort Mitchell, KY passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, January 13, 2025. Kathy is survived by her children, Shannon Evangelista and Brian McKenzie; her father, Richard Kabitsch (Judy); her brother, Michael Kabitsch (Eileen); grandchildren, Gabriel, Christian and Julian; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin McKenzie and her mother, Mary Ellen Kabitsch.
Kathy was born on August 1, 1961, in Covington, KY. She grew up in Park Hills and Fort Mitchell, KY attending Blessed Sacrament and Beechwood Schools. She worked for the Internal Revenue Service for many years in multiple roles earning a number of promotions and awards. Her colleagues knew her as a consistent producer always willing to take on extra work to get the job done. She was very good at what she did, never calling attention to herself but always looking to help others.
Away from work, she loved the outdoors, especially camping with friends and family. Her favorite destination was by far The Great Smoky Mountains and Gatlinburg, Tennessee, a place she grew to love from the time she was a little girl. She loved animals of all kinds but especially dogs, who were always considered part of the family.
Kathy met the love of her life, Calvin, while still in her teens. They were together for over 40 years and were blessed with their 2 children, Shannon and Brian. Her family always came first. She loved being a wife and mom and more recently a proud grandma to Gabriel, Christian and Julian.
Kathy endured many hardships and loss in her life. She persevered through it all with strength, resilience and a deep faith in God’s plan. She was a selfless, kind soul with a heart of gold.
