Richard L. Detzel

Richard L. Detzel, 81 years of age, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 31, 2024, at The Christ Hospital, Hospice of Cincinnati with his loving family by his side. Rich was the loving husband of Kathy Detzel (nee Callahan) of 49 years. Loving father of Dan Detzel (Kerry), Sarah Davidson (Craig), and Dave Detzel. Loving grandfather and great-grandfather of Jordan, Jaden, Braxton, Jaxon, Bentley, Otto, Juliona, Braylen, Eleanor, and Klara. Dear brother of Joe Detzel (Sue) and his twin brother Rob Detzel. 

Rich graduated from Covington Catholic High School where he was a member of the baseball and swim teams. He attended Eastern Kentucky University on a swim scholarship. Shortly after college, Rich joined the United States Coast Guard. He went on to found The Nature Academy, where he spent 20 years as executive director teaching environmental education to elementary students and at-risk youth. He was an avid storyteller with an extensive collection of jokes. He loved disc golf, playing in various competitions over the years as well as enjoying many rounds with family and friends. He also particularly cherished convertible rides with his wife. Rich was unwavering in his Catholic faith, attending Mass daily, and had a strong devotion to his family. 

Visitation will be held Friday, September 6, 4:00 - 6:00 pm at St. Barbara Church in Erlanger, Kentucky. Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow. A private family burial will take place at St. Mary Cemetery. The family has asked for memorial donations in lieu of flowers to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Covington.
