Tilo Wald

February 17, 1943 — September 7, 2024

Ft. Wright

Tilo Wald, 81, of Fort Wright, Kentucky, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 7, 2024, in his home of 37 years.

Tilo was born on February 17, 1943, to Kurt Wald and Elisabeth Memmel DeFreest, in Wurzburg, Germany. He immigrated to the United States with his family, including his step-father James DeFreest, in June 1957, to Killeen Texas, where he graduated from High School. Tilo was enlisted in the ARMY in Fort Hood, Texas. He later went on to become a West Point Academy cadet, where he met his wife Carol Ann Adler. They married on September 10, 1966, moved to Georgia, where he graduated from Georgia Tech and they started a family.

Tilo will be remembered as a passionate sports fan, especially soccer, which he both played and coached. Whatever the sport, he was enthusiastic. A wonderful husband, father, Opa, Uropa, brother, uncle, loved by all. Tilo and Carol loved to travel and made so many precious memories to pass on.

He is survived by his son Darrin Wald (Anne) of Cornelius, North Carolina, his daughter, Tandi Griffin, of Waxhaw, North Carolina, and his son Gregory Wald (Aimee), of Independence, Kentucky, brothers Udo Wald (Janet), Heiko Wald, and sister Tilla Jones (BJ). Tilo was a loving and proud grandfather to Trevor Isaacs, Laine Wald, Allison Isaacs, Grace Wald, Graham Wald, Emma Wald, Rylie Wald, and Charli Griffin. He also leaves behind one great-granddaughter, Elisabeth Rains, and one great-grandson, Grey Wald.

At this time, we will not be having a memorial service but will celebrate his life at a later date.
